Book Summary

Set in the fictional town of St. Petersburg along the Mississippi River, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer follows the escapades of an imaginative and rebellious boy living with his Aunt Polly. Tom's days are filled with schemes to avoid school and chores, most famously convincing other boys to pay him for the privilege of whitewashing a fence. Alongside his friend Huckleberry Finn, the town's young outcast, Tom embarks on adventures that range from playing pirates on a Mississippi island to exploring haunted houses.

The novel takes a darker turn when Tom and Huck witness Injun Joe murder Dr. Robinson in a graveyard at midnight. Their secret knowledge weighs heavily as innocent Muff Potter is blamed for the crime. Tom's courage is tested when he must decide whether to testify in court. Later, while exploring McDougal's Cave with his sweetheart Becky Thatcher, Tom becomes lost in the labyrinthine passages where he encounters the fugitive Injun Joe. The story culminates with Tom and Huck discovering a fortune in hidden gold, transforming them from outcasts to heroes in their small town.
