Dear Language Learner,
April was an interesting month, and I experimented with some new types of content. In addition to creating regular content, I have been working on two new content formats that I would like to tell you about.
Mixed-Voice Content
I have created new stories that follow a natural flow with multiple speakers. I hope this makes the stories feel more dynamic and exposes you to different voices and accents. For mixed-voice stories, the content will also be available with individual speakers. So if you have a favourite speaker, you will not miss out.
Beginner Steps Stories
In addition to the Language Introduction content that is already available for most languages, I am creating new Beginner Steps Stories. These stories use the most accessible language possible, with short sentences and simple structures. They are designed to be an excellent introductory tool for learning a new language. The idea is that these stories function as a stepping stone towards more challenging language content. My goal is to create roughly 10 Beginner Steps Stories per language.
Monthly Quote About Learning a Language
This month’s language quote is taken from Italian director and filmmaker Federico Fellini. He said:
“Un linguaggio diverso è una diversa visione della vita.”
Wikiquote lists it under Fellini and cites Telepiù no. 26, 23–29 June 2012.
Loosely translated, the quote means:
“A different language is a different vision of life.”
The key word is “linguaggio.” In Italian, this can mean a spoken language, but it can also mean a broader language of expression: the language of cinema, gestures, art, emotion, social behaviour, or culture.
So Fellini’s line is not only saying, “French is different from Italian” or “Dutch is different from English.” It is saying that every language gives us a different lens through which life becomes visible.
For language learners, this is a powerful idea. Learning another language is not just about memorising new words for the same reality. It changes what you notice: forms of politeness, humour, intimacy, rhythm, emotion, and even what feels natural to say.
For example, a language may give you different ways to express affection, distance, respect, or doubt. In that sense, a new language does not simply translate your existing world; it partly reorganises it. This philosophical take on language learning is certainly interesting to remember when you are learning a new language. I hope this motivates you to keep learning.
