Straatinterviews in Amsterdam

“Hello. My name is Dirk, and I am from Amsterdam City News. Today we are doing short street interviews. We would like to hear simple stories from people in Amsterdam. Could you tell us something about yourself and also say how you feel today?”

“Of course. My name is Melanie. I’m forty-one years old and I live in Amsterdam with my husband and son. I work at a school, and my days are often long, but I really like helping children learn new things. Today I have the day off. I feel a little tired, but in a good way. My classes are always full of energy, and that makes me happy. After this interview, I want to buy some bread, go home, and eat with my family.”

“What do you like most about working at a school? And how do you unwind when you get home after a long day? Do you enjoy quiet evenings with your family, or would you rather do something active, like taking a short walk nearby?”

“The children are what I like best. They ask a lot of questions, and every day is a little different. Sometimes I’m tired, but I never get bored. In the evening, I usually like simple things. I enjoy eating with my family, helping my son with his homework, and sitting quietly for a while with a cup of tea. Sometimes I also watch a little TV to relax.”

“Thank you, Melanie. It is nice to hear about your day, and it is nice to hear that small moments can make people happy, even when life is busy.”

As the day goes on, Dirk lowers the microphone and looks into the camera with a smile. Today he has spoken with people who have very different lives. One person is starting a new job, one person works hard on a busy day, and one person thinks about family and home. Each answer tells a different story. Dirk gets ready to close the program and give a short summary of today’s interviews.

“And now we are at the end of our interviews. Today we heard different stories from people in Amsterdam. The streets are full of movement, but also full of people with feelings, plans, and worries. The camera slowly moves away while people keep walking through the city. Trams stop and move on again, cups of coffee go from hand to hand, and voices fill the warm afternoon air. Dirk becomes smaller in the distance while he waves to the camera.
