When I travel in Italy, I like to start from the centre of a city, because there I understand the atmosphere right away. I walk along a main street and then I turn into a small street, just out of curiosity. Every place has its own history, and every area has a different rhythm.

In one region you find open landscapes, and in another one you find hills and villages. Sometimes I stop in a small town, even if on the map it seems like just an ordinary area. But then I discover an interesting place, and the day changes.

In Rome I often pass by the main square and sit there for a moment to watch the people. Then I move towards a quieter neighbourhood, where there are fewer tourists. I cross a bridge and arrive near a park, where the air is lighter.

If I have time, I go into a garden and walk slowly among the trees. Sometimes I stop in an inner courtyard, far from the noise of the streets. Rome is a big city, but it always manages to offer a quiet corner.

When I go to Milan, I look for a comfortable place near the center so I can get around without stress. I book a hotel or a hostel, depending on the kind of trip. If I arrive late, I leave my luggage and I look for a good place to eat right away.

I choose a restaurant for a calm dinner, or a pizzeria if I want something simple. After dinner I go into a bar or a coffee shop, and I take time to watch the city. Milan has many faces, and every evening seems different.

To plan the trip well, I also look at the province and I choose an area based on what I want to see. Sometimes I prefer a town or a small village, because life there is slower. Other times I look for a nearby city, so I can move around easily.
