Dear Language Learner,
March was a month full of new content and technical improvements for Love For Languages. I’d like to take you through what happened this month.
New content
A great deal of content has been added for various languages to expand the range on offer. At the moment, Italian at A1 level has the most content, with over 60 stories translated into English and Dutch. I have added new stories for many languages with English translations, so that they can hopefully be used by as many people as possible. New content has also been added for more advanced levels (A2 to B2). More content in different languages will be added in the coming months.
Application questions
Learning a language and being able to use it involves much more than simply understanding a text. That is why, alongside the existing exercises that let you test your knowledge with questions taken directly from the story, Love For Languages has developed a new feature: application questions.
This approach is based on the idea that you learn a language more deeply when you actively use it, retrieve it from memory, and apply it in new contexts. The application questions are based on the story you have read, but they do not appear in it word for word. For example, you may be challenged to conjugate verbs from the story, transform sentences, or apply language from the story using what you have already learned.
At the moment, application questions have been added to a number of stories. They are currently being expanded step by step, with the goal of eventually including them in every story and every chapter.
Monthly quote about learning a (second) language
We do not learn a language only to make ourselves understood. When we speak to someone in their own language, we show that we have made an effort to get to know them and their culture better. Even just a few words can already convey warmth, respect, and connection. Nelson Mandela expressed this beautifully:
“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.” — Nelson Mandela
